Moon Jelly – Gonads Visible Through Its Head

Not much is really known about the Aurelia aurita, but it is commonly known as the “moon jelly”, so that automatically makes it one of the more interesting species of jellyfish. Only growing to a little over a foot in diameter, the moon jelly is commonly recognized by its four horseshoe shaped gonads, that can be seen through the top of its head.

 

Pumpkinseed – Bright, Punky Nest-Builder

The pumpkinseed is a colorful spunky freshwater sunfish in the perch family and related to the oceanic Mola mola. It has a bright orange or red dot on the outside of its gill. It can grow to be 10 inches (25 cm) long and is blue and yellow-pinkish with splotchy stripes. Along the dorsal fin are 10-11 spines. Larval insects, snails and other aquatic insects are its favorite menu items. Its teeth are especially adapted for munching on snails.

 

Dhole – Wild Asian Red Dog

The dhole or Asian wild (or red) dog is an animal living in Central and Eastern Asia and further south to the islands of Sumatra and Java. This dog enjoys the forests and woodlands and sometimes open country. They look a bit like a large, slender red fox-coyote mix.

African Penguin – Black Feet and Stripes

Also known as the “black footed penguin”, the African Penguin is a penguin known for its donkey-esque bray (the noise they make to communicate with each other) that lives on the southern shores of the African continent. These banded penguins grow to about 68–70 cm (26.7–27.5 in) tall and weigh between 2 and 5 kg (4.4 and 11 lbs).

If we told you that as recently as a few years ago, a species was re-discovered after being believed to be extinct, and that this species had a glowing orange head, metallic blue body, and fed on the bones of large animals; you’d probably run for the hills. Well you’d want to, but once you saw it you’d change your mind because this terrifying creature is nothing more than a fly with a terrible name.
