Estimates vary by source but there are approximately 40 species in the cat family (Felidae). There has been considerable disagreement as to the organization of the cat family, living and extinct, but genetic study is now allowing scientists to more firmly define which species are mostly closely related.
There are four species of lynx: the Canada Lynx, the Eurasian Lynx, the Bobcat and the Iberian Lynx. The Iberian Lynx is the most endangered cat species in the world. If it becomes extinct, it will be the first species of cat to do so in the last 10,000 years.
Coatis are in the raccoon family and are a bit longer and thinner than raccoons. They are mostly light gray underneath and on their chest and shoulders with light or dark brown on top and rings on the tails. Their spiky-haired tail can be as long as the body. They are about 18-27 inches (46-69 cm) long and weigh about 10 lb (4.5 kg).
